Hand-Rearing Eclectus Parrots: Our Story

Our journey began in 1978, when our first Eclectus pair couldn’t care for their baby. We created our own brooder and hand-fed the chick—an experience that shaped our lifelong commitment.

Over time, we’ve refined this process, but we now prefer to allow pairs to raise their own chicks whenever possible. This natural method teaches the chicks essential skills for life as pets or future breeders.

However, intervention is sometimes necessary. If stress (like nearby construction or unfamiliar visitors) threatens the chicks, we step in to protect and raise them by hand.

Eclectus Parrot Baby Care: Our Expertise

Hand-raising Eclectus chicks requires unique care. They differ from other parrots in how much and how often they eat.

Gentle Feeding Techniques – Small meals tailored to their needs
Specialized Formulas – We use Exact Hi-Fat and Psittacus
Precision Monitoring – Every feeding is temperature-checked with a thermometer
Syringe Sizes Adjusted – Based on growth stage
Aspiration Risk Awareness – We educate against feeding mistakes that can be fatal

⚠️ We never recommend selling or buying unweaned chicks unless the owner has advanced experience.

Weaning & Transition

As Eclectus chicks approach weaning (typically around 16 weeks), they may resist hand-feeding. This stage requires extra care to avoid malnutrition.

Once fully weaned, chicks are either introduced into our flock or placed in loving, experienced homes.

Important Notes for Eclectus Owners

Proper Brooder Temperatures – Unique to Eclectus chicks
Tailored Feeding Techniques – Age-appropriate syringe sizes and formula
No Sales of Unweaned Birds – To protect chicks and owners from unnecessary risk
